On an island in the Abyss lives a golem whose purpose is to prove knights’ Valor in combat. He appears in Ultima Underworld.

Description[edit]

As a service to the Knights of the Crux Ansata, the golem was created by a mysterious Seer named Lerin. The golem has an invincible constitution, but is reluctant to kill any of his opponents and will desist from combat, once satisfied that the knight has proved his Valor.

The Avatar met him on the sixth level of the Abyss on an island in a lava lake. The golem said that if the hero managed to defeat him, the prize would be the Shield of Valor.

The Avatar managed to do so, and the impressed golem surrendered the artifact shield.

Lore[edit]

Scan of the cover of the Ultima Underworld Clue Book, depicting an adventurer descending a flight of dungeon stairs, with an armoured monster at the bottom, in the foreground.

On this island, surrounded by lava, resides the Golem, who once tested the mettle of Sir Cabirus’ warriors. Sir Cabirus’ talisman, the Shield of Valor, is in its possession, promised as a prize for any who defeats the Golem, but the surrounding lava is so daunting and the Golem is so mighty I do not fear that the shield will fall into the wrong hands.

Thou wagerest thy life against a mighty talisman - the Shield of Valor. Defeat me and it shall be thine. Fail and thou shalt surely die.
– from the Valor-Test Golem (Ultima Underworld)

XP Farming Exploit[edit]

The golem is indestructible, however if the player gets its vitality down to a certain threshold the golem is considered defeated and awards the player XP. Continuing to strike the golem while its vitality is at this threshold doesn't accomplish anything, and the golem informs the player that there is nothing more to prove. The golem, like all creatures in the game including the player, regenerates vitality over time. So if the player waits a moment for the golem to gain vitality and then strikes bringing its vitality to the lower threshold again, the defeat sequence is triggered and XP is awarded again. There is no change in the golem's conversation tree to indicate that this is happening, but the player can notice their XP rises on their character page.
