Species: gargoyle
Appearances
Ultima VII
Location: Covetous

Fodus is a gargish mine miner working in Covetous during Ultima VII.

Description[edit]

Visibly afflicted with severe desquamation and barely coherent when spoken to, Fodus was obviously suffering from prolonged use of silver serpent venom, a dangerous stimulant which was being used to keep the Britannian Mining Company's (BMC) gargoyle workers awake and able to work for extended shifts. If spoken to by the Avatar, the sickly worker would mistake him for the mine's foreman, Mikos, and plead with the hero not to be given further doses of the drug. In such a delirium, the gargoyle would let slip mention of the "secret ore" he was hunting for, giving a vital clue to the BMC's covert harvesting of blackrock.[1]

Should the hero discuss Fodus' condition with Mikos, the cruel supervisor would claim that the worker was making excuses to shirk his duties, and would ask the Avatar to leave the mines.[2] While this grim situation could not be addressed immediately, eventually the disbandment of the Fellowship and the Restoration which followed would force sweeping reforms to be made in the treatment of laborers, although it is not known if Fodus would have lived long enough to see them.

Lore[edit]

While visiting the mines, I spied a Gargoyle worker in pitiful shape. If I thought Gargoyles could be afflicted with leprosy, I would guess that was his trouble. No one there thought his condition was anything out of the norm.
