The Ethereal Ring is a magical artifact which features in Ultima VII. With it, the Avatar is able to penetrate the defenses of the Tetrahedron Generator in the dungeon Deceit.

Description[edit]

The Ethereal Ring originally belonged to the Gargish king, Lord Draxinusom, who was forced in the years after his people's immigration to Britannia to sell it to the mad "Sultan" of Spektran, Martingo. Years later, when the Avatar at last awakened the sleeping sorceress Penumbra in Moonglow, the seer told the hero that this ring would be needed to best the perils of the Guardian's generator, that the ravaged ether may be restored.[1]

Landing on Spektran, the hero reclaimed the ring from Martingo, who had locked the item in his specially guarded safe, which stood defended by a Stone Harpy. Returning to Penumbra, the Avatar had the woman enchant the ring, so as to enter the blackrock Tetrahedron and extinguish its power.[2]

Effectiveness[edit]

  • This ring provides immunity to Ethereal damage.

Lore[edit]

The only occupant of this island is a quirky man named Martingo. He calls himself a sultan and makes continual references to oddities that he believes surround him. He seems rather protective of his possessions, so I would be careful when approaching anything that belongs to him. I wish thee luck in any dealings thou might have with him, for his abrasive disposition did not sit well with me.

Trivia[edit]

  • In the SNES Port of Ultima VII, Draxinusom purposefully hid the Ethereal Ring in the Dungeon of Unknown Fears on Spektran.[3] In this version of the game, the Ethereal Ring causes the Avatar and accompanying weapon to align with the ethereal plane, thereby facilitating combat against the generator's guardian.[4]
