Constance is the keeper of the Well of Humility in New Magincia. She appears in Ultima VII.

Description

Orphaned at birth, Constance was largely raised by Katrina – a shepherdess who had long been the Avatar's friend and companion. From childhood, she was close to Henry, another poor child who grew to be a handsome young peddler. The two became sweethearts as youths and it seemed likely for a time that Constance and he would marry. However, sometime before the Avatar's adventures during this age, Henry lost a golden locket which he was to have given Constance as a token of his affection and the young woman angrily rejected him.

A naïve and unworldly girl, Constance thereafter fell prey to the charms of the shipwrecked Robin – an unscrupulous gambler who had, unbeknownst to her, stolen Henry's locket and who further intended to sell her into prostitution once he had enticed her to come to Buccaneer's Den with him. However, the rogue lacked transportation to thus abduct her, and while he schemed for a means off the island, she continued to tend the New Magincian Well of Humility, offering travelers dippers full of its cool waters.

Should the Avatar become involved in the matter of the missing locket, the hero could discover Robin's trickery and eventually trace the lost item to Magenta, who had mistakenly taken it, thinking it to be a gift from her husband, Boris. The champion of the virtues could then return the locket to Henry, allowing the two lovers to at last make amends.

It seems mat Henry has taken a fancy to Constance, the water-carrier. Now, a merchant may have something to offer a pretty young thing, but a small-time peddler like Henry has barely the means to feed himself, let alone another. This news I learned from Katrina, who has shared Henry's friendship since they were children. Trivia

• If Iolo, Shamino and/or Dupre are in the party while asking Constance for water, the companions will also drink from the well – save Dupre, who will hold off for "stronger stuff than water."
• Should Henry be present when the Avatar tells Constance of the recovery of the locket, the hero can witness the couple's reconciliation.
• Should the Avatar learn of Robin's plot and end up killing him, the hero may tell Constance of the danger she avoided, assuring her that the scoundrels responsible will not bother her again.
