Beren is a sorcerer who acts as the primary law enforcement agent of the city of Tenebrae. He appears in Ultima VIII.
Description[edit]
Beren maintained homes both in the enclave of Daemon's Crag and in Tenebrae, and at the latter location he served as an arbiter of justice for common crimes in the city. Should anyone commit detectable acts of assault or theft within Tenebrae's walls, Beren would be summoned to judge their guilt and execute them if necessary, rending his condemned victims apart by means of magical fire.
A private man outside of the cabal, Beren would speak to the Avatar in passing, but would not converse with the hero at length until the loosing of Hydros, at which point he would complain that the overflow from Carthax Lake had caused the lava in Mouth of the Daemon to cool and allow outsiders access to the sorcerers' domain.[1] The Avatar would later use this knowledge to enter the enclave, whereupon Beren would caution against provocative attitudes while amidst Pyros’ followers.
If the Avatar's involvement in the enclave's power struggles resulted in the death of Beren's mentor and lover, Bane, the choleric sorcerer would easily lose patience with the hero and attack after too many attempts to speak with him.[2] Alternatively, if the hero's ministrations resulted in the death of Vardion, Bane's rival, Beren would express appreciation for disposing of the man.[3]
Whatever Beren's attitudes toward the Avatar, however, he would eventually come to show obeisance to the hero following the death of Malchir, in recognition of the new Master of the sorcerers.
Trivia[edit]
- Certain conversation trees involving Beren can trigger bugs some of which render the game unwinnable.
- When the Avatar meets Beren on the lava river, the latter can be in one of three statuses: (1) he never met the Avatar before; (2) they met and Beren got angry; (3) they met, Beren got angry, but then accepted an apology. The game files include dialogue trees for the lava river encounter, but only for the first two statuses. Hence, the very buggy dialogue in the third case.
