Anjor is a mage found on the fifth level of the Abyss during the time of Ultima Underworld.

Description[edit]

When the Avatar met him, Anjor explained how he was searching for a way to create gold. He had made progress, but for a breakthrough he needed zanium. Sadly, the mine was closed and the only one who knew the access code was one of the exiles, Kneenibble. Anjor had killed one of the exiles in self-defense so they refused to talk to him. After getting the combination from Kneenibble, Anjor tried his luck in the mines, but the ghosts in it chased him off. Anjor promised the Avatar a reward for procuring at least 80 zanium for him (only one had to be picked up, the rest would be attracted to it).

After doing so, Anjor created a huge gold nugget for the Avatar, which the hero could give to Goldthirst for a magical weapon.

Lore[edit]

Scan of the cover of the Ultima Underworld Clue Book, depicting an adventurer descending a flight of dungeon stairs, with an armoured monster at the bottom, in the foreground.

This is the dwelling of Anjor, an alchemist — and, if I must admit it, a good one. His researches into the transformation of base metals to gold have advanced that art. Fortunately, he is tormented by the fact that he will never leave the Abyss to profit from his knowledge, or share it! If you visit him to strip his knowledge from him, he will implore you to extract his essential reagent, zanium, from the mines; he will trade the stuff for an appropriate reward of gold, should you, dear Malabelle, decide to increase your treasury.

Many years ago, I began research into methods for turning lower metals into gold. During the course of my research, I discovered a new and better method that depends on a particular, very rare substance. I quest to find more of this substance.

Trivia[edit]

  • Although nothing definitive is said, Anjor's work could have contributed to the spell Create Gold.
  • Anjor claims to be terrified of the apparitions in the mine, however there are two ghosts (one is hostile to the Avatar, the other not) taking residence in the room directly nextdoor to his own domicile.
