Conversation[edit]
Father Adrian: "Excellent! I have called in a few favours whilst you have been away. Cricket of the Bards Guild and Merida of the Tinkers Guild are willing to teach you their Mantras... but..."
You: There's always a catch."
Father Adrian: "Well, they have some conditions before they'll teach you the Mantras. You may need to get a bit more experience before they'll teach you."
You: "I'll go find them."
...
Guildscribe Cricket: "All you Strangers want to learn the Mantra of Compassion. Well this is no soft and easy task. True Compassion is harder than you know."
You: "Compassion is simple, isn't it?" (Story)
Guildscribe Cricket: "Just because something is simple, does not mean it is easy. You may be born with an instinct for Compassion, but the trine of empathy, sympathy and action is hard to master."
You: "Born with an instinct?" (Story)
Guildscribe Cricket: "Humans are social animals. Caring for others, for the good of the tribe... this is in our blood. Sadly, life can all too easily crush this instinct and replace it with falsehood."
You: "What's this Trine suff?"
Guildscribe Cricket: "Compassion is a trinity. Empathy is the ability to feel another's pain. Sympathy is the ability to understand another's pain, whist Action is the will to do something about it."
You: "I'm ready to learn." (Advance Quest)
Guildscribe Cricket: "If you are only kind when others are grateful, you do not have Compassion; you are vain. I intend to test your patience and your conscience before I teach you the Mantra."
(You have three choices:)
- "Well, I intend to pass with flying colours!" (+Valour)
- "I need a challenge to make me try harder." (+Humility)
- "I see you have my best interests at heart." (+Spirituality)
Guildscribe Cricket: "There is a Beggar in Britain called Little Deuce. He is... difficult. When he comes to me and says you are kind, then I will teach you the Mantra. Good luck! You'll need it."
You: "I'll find Little Deuce."
...
Little Deuce: "Another vain Stranger here to prate about how they're going to save the world. Way I hear it you can barely save your own planet, let alone someone else's!"
You: "So, why are you so obnoxious?" (Story)
Little Deuce: "Now let me see. Could it be that I am destitute, that my family was killed, or perhaps that this city of two-faced liars treats me like dirt?"
You: "Two-faced liars? I don't follow." (Story)
Little Deuce: "The Bards talk about Britain being the city of Compassion, but how come Minoc is the town with the poorhouse? Because those fops are all moth and no trousers, that is why!"
You: "Who killed your family?" (Story)
Little Deuce: "My family died of The Weep. Those crazy fools from the Lycaeum decided to burn my farm down to stop the spread. Bastards."
You: "Well, I'm here to help you." (Advance Quest)
Little Deuce: "So you're going to resurrect my wife, rebuild my burnt farm, clear my family name and overturn an unjust feudal society that leaves folk like me to rot?"
(You have three options:)
- "I said I would do whatever it takes." (+Honour)
- "Well, I see why you're so angry now." (+Compassion)
- "Can't I just give you money." (+Honesty)
Little Deuce: "All you are good for is fetching bread from a Minoc poorhouse."
You: "Fine, if that's what you want."
...
Linda Sue: "Welcome, Stranger. Have you come to donate to the poorhouse? Or perhaps help our residents out?"
You: "I need some bread." (Advance Quest)
Linda Sue: "This bread ain't supposed to be for the likes of you. I could sneak you some, but you'd need to do me a favour, and a bloody-handed killing deal at that."
(You have three options:)
- "I'm not frightened of a little blood." (+Valour)
- "But, I'm here in the name of Compassion." (+Compassion)
- "Tell me more before I decide." (+Justice)
Linda Sue: "There's a nasty group of Goblins abducting homeless folk on the road. Deal with them and you will do my friends more good than a bushel of bread. I'll give you as much as you want."
You: "Where are these Goblins?" (Story)
Linda Sue: "They're camped near the Shrine of Compassion. Follow the road South from Minoc, and head West when you pass Poisonwood."
(You have two choices:) "Fine, I'll go kill these goblins." (Advance Quest)
Linda Sue: "
(or) "I'd rather not fight a demon in the name of Compassion." (Advance Quest)
Linda Sue: "If you don't want to bother yourself for the good of other people, you'll get nothing from me. I hear Moonglow has a lovely food shop; why don't you get your bread there?"
You: "I'll go see this Moonglow shop."
...
Shaman: "Welcome to the Sage Deli. We're rather busy right now with a large order, but if there is something you need I'll try and squeeze you in."
You: "Why are you so busy?" (Story)
Shaman: "We've had a large order for Lord Blackthorn, up at his Keep. You know how he is, a stickler for detail. There will be trouble if everything isn't perfect."
You: "What sort of trouble?" (Story)
Shaman: "Blackthorn has a bit of a temper. I wouldn't like to fail him. Powerful noble like him could ruin my trade with just a few words..."
You: "Is it some sort of celebration?" (Story)
Shaman: "There's been quite a few banquets up there recently. I expect he's entertaining other nobles. You know how they like to show off to each other."
You: "Tell me about the Keep?" (Story)
Shaman: "It's been a funny sort of place lately. I hear old Blackthorn has a crab in his codpiece about the Virtues again. He's getting to be very strict, so the rumours go."
You: "I want to buy some bread." (Advance Quest)
Shaman: "I'm afraid my stock is all bought up. I've got an order from Blackthorn's Keep to fill, and I need every loaf if I'm to keep the Lord happy."
(You have three options:)
- "Of course, you can't go back on a deal." (+Honour)
- "Can you spare just a crust for a soul in need." (+Sacrifice)
- "I knew this wouldn't be easy." (+Spirituality)
...
Bread Bin: [A fresh loaf of bread lies on this shelf. It would be easy to grab when no one is looking...]
Bread Bin: [You grab the loaf and slip it up your sleeve.]
...
You: "I've got your bread." (Advance Quest)
Little Deuce: "Bit stale ain't it? What, you think 'cos I'm a beggar you can cheat me of decent food?"
(You have three options:)
- "Do you know what I had to do to get that?" (+Honour)
- "Look, just tell Cricket I helped." (+Humility)
- "Really? I'm helping and you're still rude to me?" (+Honesty)
(Regardless of your choice, he agrees to speak with Cricket.)
You: "Thanks."
...
You: "I fed that thankless Beggar." (Advance Quest)
Guildscribe Cricket: "Pain in the arse, isn't he? I'm glad you rose above his sharp tongue and did the right thing. It proves you are worthy."
You: "Then tell me the Mantra." (Advance Quest)
Guildscribe Cricket: [Cricket nods approvingly and whispers the Mantra of Compassion to you.]
You: "Thanks."
Trivia[edit]
- Little Deuce says the only poorhouse is in Minoc, but Britain also houses a Kitchen.
