The cloth map

Ultima Online including a cloth map, showing Britannia.

Description[edit]

This map is quite different than what was seen in the single player Ultima series due to Ultima Online occurring in an alternative universe. The map is useful for gameplay, since it helps a lot to navigate through the vast wilderness. However, the automap function of the game negates this somewhat.

Other Releases of the Map[edit]

The cloth map was included in the first release of the game. Later re-releases, like in Ultima Online: The Second Age (with the Lost Lands map on the flip side), only had a paper map, and even later ones no map at all. The paper map does show a different color balance compared to the cloth map.

The Japanese edition of Ultima Online contains a different cloth map. The white border is thicker, the material is thinner and the color balance was shifted, causing everything on the map to appear brighter compared to the North American version.

Note that for the expansion Ultima Online: Third Dawn, a limited special cloth map was made, with a map of the Lost Lands right beside Britannia. The special cloth map was also sold in a special edition in Taiwan. The map can be seen below. This combined map, as well as most later issues of the original map, replace the runic on the map with normal Latin letters, clearly so that beginner players would not be confused. Since the cloth map was only a limited run, and all later maps – like all other editions world-wide – were made of paper. The Japanese version translates the names of towns, shrines and virtues, but nothing else.
