Mariah, upset at being awakened at a late hour

An eighteen year old mage named Mariah [マリア] appears in Yoko Tanaka's 1989 Ultima-inspired manga, Ultima: The Quest of the Avatar, although she bears little relation to the character featured in the game series.

Description[edit]

A serious magician with a low tolerance for frivolity, Mariah first encountered the party when Shamino -a smitten youth with an obvious history of trying her patience- brought to her the wounded Kati in the hopes that he could be healed.[1] After bringing the young shepherd boy back from the edge of death with her magic, Mariah agreed to join with Deane and his companions if the youthful paladin could bring her a total of fifty mandrake roots - a task which was eventually accomplished with the assistance of the protagonist's childhood tutor, Calumny.[2]

Cool and to the point, Mariah proved a valuable asset to the party, often using her magical prowess to save the company from danger. Her polite admiration of Deane caused slight tumult when Io frets that her manners may have contained the seed of romantic overtures - although it seems clear that Deane's affections remained largely with the cute young bard.[3] Such warm exchanges also frustrated Shamino, who had been long unable to break the magician's icy demeanor in spite of his near continuous flirtation.
