Virtuebane in Ultima Online

Virtuebane is a daemon who stalks the ruins of Magincia during Ultima IV.

Description[edit]

Prior to Ultima IV, the inhabitants of Magincia provoked a horde of daemons to attack their city due to their insufferable pride. It is unknown if Virtuebane numbered amongst this horde, but it is known that the city was razed, and that the souls of those who perished were condemned to haunt the ruins of their overweening hubris.

Should the Stranger encounter Virtuebane, the devil would gloat about Magincia's downfall, and would explain to the hero that the city had been destroyed for foolishly trusting in the false virtue of pride.[1]

Trivia[edit]

  • In the Nintendo remake of Ultima IV (where most character names were omitted and dialogue was significantly modified), Virtuebane can be identified with the demon in the same location, who similarly welcomes the Stranger to the ruined city.[2]
  • In the alleged journal of the Avatar discovered by historians Robert DeMain and Carlotta Stein, Virtuebane is mentions as speaking in an unreadable voice, which the hero describes as a mix of sarcasm, sorrow and whimsy. He pays little attention to the Stranger, choosing instead to pick his long yellow teeth as he surveys the dead city.[3]
  • In Ultima Online, it was Virtuebane was spearheaded the invasion of Magincia proved responsible for the isle's devastation. Within the game world, he continued to terrorize the island until his defeat in 2011, at which point he was sent back to the pits which spawned him.
