Talk:Ultima IX map of Britannia
"The map is a break with its predecessor maps of Britannia. While it shows many details, it is treated more like an huge piece of art and is less useful as a map to get information about the terrain."
I don't understand this line. While U9 has no shortage of problems, its cloth map is arguably the most intricately detailed of the entire series. How exactly is it a break from its predecessors and less useful for terrain information? --Terilem 02:17, September 1, 2010 (UTC)
- Meh, that's just more Ultima IX bias, since you know - everything related to Ultima IX has to be sucky. I'd actually argue the U9 map is one of the most useful of the series because it really fits the game world and you can easily figure out where you are on it, solely by looking at the surrounding. I guess one could argue the cloth map in itself is not that useful because you have the same one in-game, but point still stands. I'm inclined to have this line removed. --Sergorn 05:35, September 1, 2010 (UTC)
Subjectivity redux[edit]
With regards to the statement that has been re-added:
"... unlike the maps from previous games, the map looks more like a piece of art than a practical navigation tool."
I still agree with my post from 2010 up there. The map looks pretty faithful to the game world and the cartography style is comparable to the U6 and SI maps, so in what way is it less of a practical navigation tool than the others, and how are previous maps any less pieces of art? --Terilem (talk) 05:26, 13 March 2019 (MDT)
- I can somewhat agree with the statement. It is more of a artistic rendition of a bird eye view in appearance than the more dry and simple maps of the real world or some previous Ultimas. Is it useful as a navigational tool: yes, actually more so. It’s like using Google Earth as a map. - Iceblade
- Thank you for your input, Iceblade. I certainly agree it's more detailed than previous maps; I just don't see how it follows that the rendition reduces its practicality. The sentence is an opinion regardless, so I'll try to reword it into something objective. --Terilem (talk) 01:04, 14 March 2019 (MDT)
