Talk:Earth (Pangea)

I was under the impression that speculation in the Trivia section was acceptable, particularly when identified as such. Since there is a significant timeline difference between the existence of our real-world Pangea and that of Ultima II, it seemed a logical conclusion. Also: Throwing "ones" into a sentence that was already grammatically sound is just unnecessary. --Polygoncount 22:59, August 19, 2010 (UTC)
- About the "ones", feel free to undo it. I just felt it wasn't grammatically sound, but I'm not a native English speaker, so I am prone to make this kind of mistakes.
- About the speculation, it is true we talked somewhere (in a forum or talk page) that we might want to include speculation inside the trivia. However, what finally went into the style guide was not to include speculation; therefore, I removed it.
- Now, speaking about speculation, I feel that it should be removed in general from this wiki, or any wiki that tries to be a reliable source of information. I have contributed with speculation to other wikis, but with some minor exceptions, almost all wikis have ended up deciding to remove speculation, as it usually adds nothing of use, or creates confusion, or may even introduce wrong information in the worst case. Many times, a logical conclusion for one editor will not be the same conclusion another editor may reach. I love speculating, for example, on how to make the different Ultima games fit. But in places such as this wiki, I think that the simplest way to deal with speculation is just to avoid it. Accepting "lesser" speculation tends to be more problematic. In this case, it wasn't that much of a stretch, but I felt it didn't add much, and it was speculation nonetheless. So, following the guide and my instinct to keep things simple, I just removed it. We can re-take this topic in a forum, if we would like to change the style guide in order to officially accept some kind of speculation. However, I am more and more convinced that the best solution is to avoid speculation altogether.--Sega381 01:22, August 20, 2010 (UTC)
- As far as speculation goes, I also have a general distaste for it, even in trivia sections. I feel it simply gives an excuse to be subjective and there tends to be too much "junk" in the trivia lists as it is.
- I was the one who added the Trivia section to the style guide; in light of this conversation and the one that I apparently missed about okay-ing speculation, it appears I may have jumped the gun a bit and forced an opinion on the issue. I wrote it with the intention of falling in line with the general trend around here, though. --Terilem 03:53, August 20, 2010 (UTC)
