Susadora
Susadora [スサドラ] is a young pirate captain who is the protagonist for Hiroyuki Watanabe's 1990 Ultima-inspired manga, Ultima: The Fall of Magincia.
Description[edit]
Susadora was an arrogant and impetuous youth, described as being somewhere in his late teens. Despite his age, he had attained leadership over the pirates of the island village of Golaia, having likely inherited some of the reputation of his father, who famously united the disparate pirate gangs of Buccaneer's Den years prior. Despite a taste for violence and an often amoral outlook on life, Susadora nevertheless remained steadfastly loyal to his family and crew, and was quick to come to their defense.
In the course of the manga, Susadora's small band of sailors came into conflict with the forces of Vitor, an evil magician who acted as head of the Magincian merchants. After being framed for the massacre of a Britannian naval vessel by one of the sorcerer's daemonic simaracula, Susadora and his men were forcibly captured by commander Rani Sentri and brought before Lord British. The monarch, seeing through Vitor's ruse, sent the brash young pirate to slay the enchanter, having realized through means of prophecy that Susadora was destined to save Britannia.[1]
Susadora would grow close to Rani during his adventures, as the stoic fighter was ordered to accompany him. Eventually, after numerous perils, the destruction of Golaia and the massacre of his friends and family, the heroic youth would rally the pirates of Buccaneer's Den to assault Magincia, and he, himself, would take on the challenge of slaying Vitor.
In this final battle, it was revealed that Susadora was a reincarnated godling, having formerly served alongside Vitor in the celestial heavens - where they guarded the temple of the Creator. Falling prey to a nihilistic desire to return the universe to emptiness, Vitor had chosen to incarnate himself as a deity of evil, striving throughout time to destroy humanity. Susadora, however, sympathizing with the plight of mortals, chose to pursue him - appearing time and time again in the guise of various human heroes to stop his campaign of evil. [2]
The mortal Susadora came to fully realize this truth with the assistance of his friends, who themselves had been avatars of various deities. Aware now of his heritage and purpose, the returned god grew into a giant to battle Vitor, who had transformed himself into a dragon. As the two of them fought, Magincia was destroyed in the wake of their battle. Eventually, however, the two powers found themselves slain though human artifice, with the bow of an ark built by the mortal Katrina running them both through.[3]
