Smonden is a mountain man who had been taken prisoner by Tyball. He appears in Ultima Underworld.
Description[edit]
Smonden got contacted by Garamon as a first attempt before the Avatar to bring down his brother by re-uniting the Key of Three Parts. However, Tyball caught the man, and, enraged when finding out the connection to his dead brother, tortured Smonden harshly.
When the Avatar freed him from Tyball's prison on the seventh level of the Abyss after slaying the evil mage, Smonden lamented his continuing sense of imprisonment; having been unable to complete his quest for the Key of Courage for so long, he could no longer resume because of his ill health. When the Avatar offered to do it for him, Smonden gave the hero the key to the secret stairwell that would lead to the key, also describing which way to go in order to reach the door. He no longer had any interest in the quest.
Later, Garamon rescued him when the volcano erupted.
