Myrtle (also known as "Mama") is a nudist hermit living in a cave of giant bees with her husband Murray in Ultima VII.
Description[edit]
Myrtle had once been a citizen of Yew, where she had lived with Murray, an apothecary. Due to the overzealous ministrations of the Britannian Tax Council, however, the couple fled civilization, unable to cope with the fees levied at Murray's business.[1] Finding shelter in the company of the giant bees, the pair took to a life of idyllic isolation, harvesting honey from their apian companions at they slept and eating mice as a source of protein. Calling themselves "Mama" and "Papa," the two hermits put on an exaggerated performance for anyone who found them, speaking in stilted pidgin English and claiming to have lived in the cave since infancy.[2]
Should the Avatar learn of the couple's actual origins from Murray, Myrtle would drop her affectation as Mama, although she would be somewhat put out that the secret had been revealed, having enjoyed the game of deceiving travelers. She spoke fondly of her new life among the bees and of her husband, saying she had no regrets about abandoning society.[3]
Lore[edit]
“ | I have heard of two people — citizens of Britain, so I hear tell — who live near the caves. A man and woman, from their description. I know not how they survive, but were I to meet them on my next journey home, I would, indeed, tip my hat. – from Key to the Black Gate (Ultima VII)
