Lobar is a swordsman from the world of Killorn Keep. He appears in Ultima Underworld II.

Description[edit]

Lobar had been something of a prodigy in his youth, and had won fame as a duelist in the empire's capitol, besting even the mighty Mors Gotha at swordplay. His fame, however, earned him the attentions of the Guardian who began to ply him telepathically, offering him power should he work as a killer on his behalf. Refusing to surrender to the voices which plagued him, Lobar turned to drink, attempting to drown out the words that echoed in his head with alcohol. By the age of twenty-five, the former champion swordsman found himself stationed in the lonely northern wastes at Killorn: a drunken shadow of his former glory.

Should the Avatar speak with Lobar, the inebriated fighter would do his best to relate his history and would offer to befriend the otherworldly hero, as well as providing tuition in the ways of the Guardian's "virtues" and offering training in swordsmanship. Later, it was possible that Lobar's superior, Relk, would meet his end upon the Avatar's blade, which would position the adrift young warrior as captain of the keep's guards.[1]

Lore[edit]

Lobar is a sad case — once he was world-famous, a prodigiously talented fencer, but his decision to resist the Guardian's efforts to recruit him brought him ruin. He is now second in command under Relk, but spends most of his time drunk, in an effort to starve off the guardian's psychic attacks.

Trivia[edit]

  • Altara mentions in her notes to Bishop that she sympathizes with Lobar, but has refrained from seeking his friendship for fear of casting suspicion on herself.[2]
  • Lobar offers superior training at the Swords skill, and sparring with him will add an additional point to the ability on top of what one would normal gain from training the skill.[3]
  • Lobar's portrait is based on Dupre's, and both men are noted for their disposition toward drunkenness.
