Jotham is an old sailor living in the lighthouse of Fogsbane with his granddaughter Jennifer during the events of Ultima V.
Description[edit]
Jotham had seen many things on his travels, and spoke of the great whirlpools on the ocean. He told the Avatar of the rumor that collapses inside the Underworld had caused the whirlpools, and that a ship dragged into one would be spat out into the underground caves. He added that the rumor says that those who survive that journey are eaten by the horrible creatures living down there.[1]

In Ultima V: Lazarus, Jotham told the hero that Fogsbane was originally constructed by his great-grandfather, just after the time of the Quest of the Avatar. He now spent most of his time teaching his granddaughter Jennifer how to tend the lighthouse so she could continue on the family business. Jotham felt that Lord British had been an excellent leader, but that things were better under Lord Blackthorn’s rule, with more vessels patrolling the shipping lanes, ships were more apt to return to port safely. Still, when he visited Britain from time to time, he felt there was something sinister in the towns, with the people acting strangely telling stories of creatures of shadow.[2]
He praised his granddaughter's work ethic, and noted that her mother Cynthia had also had a great love of the sea. Cynthia had married another sailor named Jonah, and the two of them had been quite in love, although, Jotham admitted it took him a long time to recognize the goodness within Jonah. Jonah was eventually lost at sea due to the whirlpools, and Cynthia wasted away soon after from the loss.
Jotham revealed more information about his travels to the Avatar. In one of his travels, he and his crew found the Serpent Pillars. However, frightened by the stone serpents, they were able to steer their ship clear of the pillars, and so they never learned what would have happened if they had crossed them. Jotham would further share other tales of his seagoing exploits, telling how he had once encountered a swarm of pirates hiding on the Isle of the Avatar, and barely made his escape after killing one of the pirate captains. He had also once travelled to Buccaneer's Den, where the pirates of the island had demanded an exorbitant price for his landing. Out of funds and with no food left from the long voyage, Jotham had done battle with the pirates, eventually emerging victorious.
Jotham would ask the hero to travel to Minoc and have a picture of his daughter restored. The Avatar could speak to Woodroffe about touching up Cynthia's portrait, and return it to the old sailor.[3] Jotham would offer the hero 50 gp for returning with the retouched picture, and if the Avatar refused the gold, Jotham would instead offer the hero a magic shield
