Ultima Underworld II
Location: Tomb of Praecor Loth

Helena is the ghost of the last queen of Rhiannon. She appears in the tomb of her husband in Ultima Underworld II.

Description[edit]

During the war against the Guardian's forces from Killorn, Helena was sent to the northern tundras of the kingdom to ensure her safety. When word eventually came to her of Loth's death at Fyrna, she committed suicide, and was eventually interred in the lower levels of his tomb. The king's paramour, Lethe, jealously arranged for her body to lie far from her husband's own resting place,[1] and when the perverse magics worked by the Three forced the spirits of Praecor Loth's people to wander his grave site in perpetuity, Helena had no means of reaching him.

When the Avatar arrived in the tomb, Helena would petition to defeat the Three and at last release her husband from his illusions that he still lived, although she warned that many had attempted this before and had died. Should the hero agree to aid her, she would reveal what she knew of the Three's powers, mentioning that while she knew little of what Umbria and Lethe were now capable of, the Avatar should be wary of Morphius and his penchant for poison and hidden snares.

After the Avatar managed to battle through to the top of the tomb and convince Praecor Loth of the reality of his own death, the hero could approach Helena again, and she would her gratitude before she joined the spirits of her husband and their kingdom's departed in the Void.[2]

Lore[edit]

Only Helena seems to have remained sane and collected — she bid me aid her in the quest to lay the dead to rest there, but I dared not defy the mighty sorcerers who had worked the spell.

Trivia[edit]

  • Due to the fact the her chambers are not on the direct path back out, players might not intuitively visit Helena again and would be unaware of her additional dialogue after freeing Praecor Loth.
