Ok, so, according to Forum:Spell infobox, we've started working on the infoboxes for the spells. At least for now, it has been decided to group all equivalent spells from different games in a single article, with the infobox describing the specifics of each spell.

However, there's a couple of questions that arise from this:

  • How to call the article? As spells change name between game, we have, for example, Awaken All and Mass Awake, which are grouped together in the same article. But the article can have only one name. Some ideas for this:
    • Use the name of the spell from the newest/latest game. This would coincide with the infobox as it is now, which shows the information for the spell in the last game first. However, the name of a spell in the latest game may not be the most "popular" one.
    • Use the name of the spell from the first game it appeared.
    • Use the name more often repeated between games, if there is a repeated name. However, if there is not, we would have to go with one of other the alternatives.
    • Use the most "popular" name. This is highly subjective, and though we could reach consensus, it could become a pain.
  • Which spell name to use in the categories? We will be creating redirects for all the spell names which are not used as the main article's name. So where to add the categories?
    • Right now, the infobox is automatically adding them to the main article. Which means that, for example, Mass Charm will be categorized under "Ultima IV Spells", when in reality, Jinx is the name of the spell in U4. But at least the U4 infobox and the category are in the same article.
    • We could add the category to each redirect article. In the case above, we could somehow remove the "Ultima IV Spells" cat from the Mass Charm main article, and add it to the Jinx redirect article. But when looking at the main article, the infobox will show "Ultima IV" and its details (among the rest of the games), but below it won't appear the Ultima IV Spells category, which could lead to confusion and to people re-adding the category to the main article as well.

Opinions?--Sega381 08:25, 2 March 2011 (PST)

So, as no opinions have been send, here is my choice for the article names:
  • Use the name for the spell more often repeated between games (between U4 and U7P2).
  • If the spell's name is never repeated, use the spell name from the latest/newest game.
As of the categories, I'm not sure yet. But by default, it would stay as it is now (no cats in the redirects, so th Cats would show spells for one game but sometimes using the name from another game).--Sega381 05:48, 5 March 2011 (PST)
Those two guidelines sound perfectly reasonable to me. I'm not sure on the categories issue at this point, either. If I'm understanding it correctly, I can see how it might be beneficial to categorize the redirects. I pretty much only ever use the search box on the left so categories aren't really how I browse the place, but I'm trying to think of those who do use them and can see how it might get a little confusing if they're expecting to see one spell name listed and getting another. Would it be much of a nuisance to go that route? --Terilem 06:58, 7 March 2011 (PST)
It is doable, but it could become confusing when reading the main article's page, as the infobox will show the U4 info, for example, but the article itself won't be in that category (as we put the redirect in the U4 spells category). So, it can be done, but it can be confusing to the reader, too.--Sega381 10:25, 9 March 2011 (PST)

Conclusions[edit]

Ok, according to the discussion here and in Talk:Lib Rec, I'll add this naming scheme as a policy. We'll leave the categories as they are right now, and if someone feels that we really should change them, we can discuss it again.--Sega381 08:26, 18 March 2011 (PDT)
