Elster is an undergraduate mage enrolled at the Scintillus Academy of Magic. He appears in Ultima Underworld II.
Description[edit]
Elster had been in the pre-examination lounge of the university grounds during an inter-dimensional attack which slew all other persons in the academy. Being exceedingly apprehensive about braving the examination environments, Elster remained in there for 63 years after the incident, trying in vain to summon an instructor to escort him back to Scintillus' common areas.
When the Avatar arrived at the academy, Elster would initially believe the hero to be the long-awaited faculty member. After learning the hero to be an inter-planar traveller, the frightened mage did his best to describe the situation nevertheless, leading the Avatar to brave the dangers of the final exam so as to learn the truth of what had happened to Scintillus. Later, perhaps inspired by the stranger's courage, Elster would enter the test area himself, only to be overwhelmed and killed by mongbats during the first segment of the exam.[1]
Trivia[edit]
- People of Elster's world have lifespans of thousands of years, which makes Elster's decision to postpone the test for over 60 years somewhat plausible.[1]
- After completing the exam, the hero may enter the first area of the test again, and may discover Elster's remains alongside an encouraging note from his mother.
