Effrem is a homemaker living in Moonglow during Ultima VII.
Description[edit]
Effrem was the husband of the Lycaeum scholar Jillian. He stayed at home to care for their son, Mikhail, while Jillian worked, and despite his obvious tenderness toward his child, the man had obvious hang-ups about the inversion of traditional gender roles that the arrangement entailed. He would privately air his grievances to the Avatar if spoken to, claiming that he, as a man, ought to be working outside of the home while his wife tended to the child. Jillian would, however, comment that he had agreed to the current situation before the baby's birth were she to catch him complaining within earshot.[1]
In spite of his bitterness, Effrem seemed a doting father who loved his son deeply, and would frequently speak to him in the midst of his conversations with the Avatar. His duties as a full time parent often kept him from being knowledgeable of happenings in the town, but he lamented that Moonglow had grown so much over the years, thinking it better when the settlement was separate from the Lycaeum.[2]
Trivia[edit]
- Should the Avatar insist upon being called "milord" or "Avatar," upon meeting Effrem, the man will passive-aggressively coo at Mikhail, telling the baby boy that their new acquaintance is either a snob or very silly.[3]
- Effrem's parting words will change depending on the Avatar's gender. When a female Avatar says her goodbyes, Effrem will exclaim, "Fine, leave me with the baby. Go on, leave me. Just like my wife!" whereas with a male avatar he will say, "Ah, that's all right, Avatar. I understand, thou hast real man things to do."[4]
