Dracothraxus is a dragon who serves as the final obstacle within the Test of Courage on the Isle of Fire in Ultima VII's expansion pack Forge of Virtue.

Description[edit]

Dracothraxus had traveled to the Isle of Fire while it still lay submerged beneath the sea, surprising the scholar Erethian who was dwelling there at the time and stealing his Ether Gem as she forced her way into the Test of Courage. Bound by unknown magicks to the Test by the Keeper of Courage, the dragon was doomed to live eternally until one could slay her – a fate she came to hopefully anticipate as the years passed over her.[1][2]

When the Avatar encountered her during the Forge of Virtue, the hero did, in fact, prove able to best her in combat, although that no matter how much lethal force was brought to bear, she would not die. Perhaps knowing already that only the Black Sword could bring her death, Dracothraxus gave the Ether Gem to the hero, who used it to bind the daemon Arcadion into a blade forged of blackrock. The Avatar returned to her with the sword and the dragon and the daemon exchanged some parting words regarding fate and free will before her life was extinguished.[3][4]

Lore[edit]

And, in fact, the castle walls are scorched in places – the aftermath of a dragon's assault upon the castle. The dragon has taken up residence here in one of the tunnels of the main cave. During her raid, she stole from me the Ether Gem, a possession of reasonable importance. As soon as I can find a way to retrieve it, her head shall be mine.

Trivia[edit]

  • The name Dracothraxus appears to be derived from the Latin words "draco" and "thrax," and would translate loosely as "dragon gladiator."
