Denis Loubet is responsible for a large proportion of Ultima imagery, dating back to Akalabeth. The span of his work includes: box cover artwork for every entry in the series (including spin-offs) except Ultima II; some or all of the illustrations for most of the accompanying playbooks; in-game tile, screen graphics and, in the case of later titles, 3D rendered cinematics. Additionally, he provided the voices of the Great Earth Serpent and Dupre in Ultima VII Part Two.
Loubet left Origin Systems in 1997 to join Illusion Machines – a small software house in Austin, Texas – and subsequently worked as a freelance artist. He maintains a web site that showcases artwork from past Ultimas, including the original art for some of the box covers.
In-game counterparts[edit]
- Monsieur Loubet: Loubet's primary in game counterpart is Monsieur Loubet, a fighter and fencing instructor who may be found at Serpent's Hold in Ultima V and Ultima VI and who appears in Runes of Virtue near Empath Abbey.
- Denys: Savage Empire contains another alter-ego of Loubet's: an exiled artist of the Urali tribe named Denys.
- Loubet lends his likeness to the character of Hazard the trapper in Ultima VII Part Two in addition to serving as the voice actor for the Great Earth Serpent and the Chaos Serpent in the same game.
- Loubet's wife, Beth Loubet (née Miller) lends her appearance to the character of Elynor in Ultima VII.
