Carlyle is a wise mage living in Skara Brae during Ultima IV.

Carlyle was an innovator, who worked on writing new forms of magic. He was of strong convictions regarding the necessity of belief and emotionality over rational thought, and seemingly applied such considerations in his pursuit of the mystic arts. Should the Stranger declare belief in magic, Carlyle would advise the Magic Missile spell required one part ash in its casting.[1]

- In the Master System-port of Ultima IV, Carlyle reveals the recipe for the Iceball spell, that was omitted from the manual, instead of the Magic Missile improved formula.
- In the Nintendo remake of Ultima IV (where most character names were omitted and dialogue was significantly modified), Carlyle can be identified as a ranger in the same location. Instead of revealing a magic spell recipe, he talks about the nearby "magical" moongate.[2]
- Carlyle takes his name from the philosopher and writer Thomas Carlyle, who is famous for his work On Heroes, Hero-Worship, and The Heroic in History in which he examines the various archetypes of heroes and their relation to society. The Ultima character quotes this publication directly in the course of gameplay, stating that "One lives by believing in something". He also echoes Carlyle's contemporary clergyman and reformer, Charles Parkhurst, with the words "Great discoveries are made by those whose feelings run ahead of their thinking".
