Borne is a goblin captain who heads a Prison Tower on the world of Tarna. He appears in Ultima Underworld II.
Description[edit]
Borne seemed a nervous and uncertain commander. At the time of the Avatar's arrival in his world, he had been tasked with the interrogation of the legendary freedom fighter, Bishop, and was growing increasingly desperate as his attempts to wrest information from the rebel leader all met with failure.
Upon meeting the Avatar, Borne (having difficulty telling one human from another)[1] mistook the hero for an inquisitor from the Tarnan capital known as Lorca Batan. By taking advantage of the goblin leader's misconceptions, the Avatar could gain access to Bishop for the purposes of releasing him and, by maintaining the deception, could obtain the miniature blackrock gem which had manifested in the Prison Tower's dimension. Contriving a story which would convince Borne to grant access to the prison's keys, the hero could thereafter release the troll Garg, who would proceed to slaughter all the goblins within the outpost.[2]
Lore[edit]
“ | This is the home of the guard-captain, Borne. He is a good commander, but his fear of the Guardian makes him ruthless — he will do anything rather than incur the Titan's displeasure. For any humans who might try to infiltrate the tower, it is worth noting that, like most of his species, Borne has difficulty telling one human from another. |

Trivia[edit]
- The Avatar may conspire with Borne to assassinate Bishop and thereafter to inform the capital that he committed suicide, thereby circumventing the need to interrogate him.[2]
- Should the Avatar deny being the inquisitor or appear to be leaving Borne in an intractable position regarding Bishop, the goblin will attack.[2]
- Borne actually can be encountered in the Ethereal Void in a dream-state, if left alive. However, considering most players either kill him or let Garg loose, this rarely is the case in games.
