Zealan ceremonial shield
The Zealan ceremonial shield is a crucial item in Ultima VIII.
Description[edit]
The front of this shield is split into three equal parts, each one showing the symbol of one of the gods of emotion of Pagan. A flame for Odion, a hand with a heart for Amoras and even scales for Apathas. Only with this shield it is possible to have an audience with the gods of emotion by placing it onto an altar in front of their statues in one of their shrines. The Avatar found two of these shields in Pagan. One hung on the wall in Mythran’s house and the scholar either had it out of curiosity or an attraction to the Zealan religion. The other shield was found in the Shrine of the Ancient Ones behind a locked door. The Avatar placed either of them on the altar in the temple deep within the Shrine of the Ancient Ones in order to speak with the three gods.
Lore[edit]
“ | Once before the Zealan deities, the worshipper still had to present one of the ancient seals before gaining permission to speak. These seals were round shields of wrought metal, embossed into a triad of sections, one depicting a reddish scimitar, another showing an open palm displaying a heart, and the third revealing an image of balanced scales. Having passed through the test of the great shrines and offered the appropriate icon, a Zealan follower would then be allowed to pray for a boon from one or all of the gods. |

Trivia[edit]
* In the canceled add-on The Lost Vale, a different shield called Shield of the Ancients, symbolizing the three other Zealan gods known as Felicitar, the goddess of joy, Doloras, the god of grief, and Timyra, the goddess of fear, would have been found broken in two halves. The gods are represented by a sun, an eclipsed sun, and a teardrop, respectively.
