Britain's gate guards protect the entrance to the city of compassion during the time of Ultima IV.

Description[edit]

Like many employed in the stewardship of Britannia's cities, the gate guards of Britain were men of few words. Should the Stranger ask them of their duties, they would speak to the hero of the town's cardinal virtue, stating that as guards they must cultivate a great deal of compassion and allow the troubles of others to be as their own. They would also advise the questing Stranger to show mercy to non-evil creatures and would frown upon admissions of doing so.[1]

Trivia[edit]

NES remake
  • In the supposed journal of the Avatar discovered by historians Robert de Main and Carlotta Stein, the gate guards of Britain are described as wearing coarsely woven cloth garments and straw hats, and they give additional exposition as to their city's place as a haven for bards.[2]
  • In the Nintendo remake of Ultima IV (where most character names were omitted and dialogue was significantly modified), the gate guards can be identified as a bard in the same location, who will instruct the Avatar about the nearest moongate.[3]
