This article is about an NPC from Ultima VI. For other uses, see William (disambiguation).

William is a farmer in New Magincia in Ultima VI.

Description[edit]

William was an old New Magincian farmer who had made peace with his life. The Avatar found William to be a pleasant, albeit unusual man, who seemed contented with his humble station that provides food for artists, musicians, and the other walks of Britannian life. William's one passion in life was for carving hippos, and he fancied himself the best hippo carver in all of Britannia.[1]

The Ultima 6 Project[edit]

This is an Ultima 6 Project-related NPC article or section. The information within may not apply to Ultima VI or other Ultima games.

In The Ultima 6 Project, William carved his hippos for his young grandchildren Will, Evie, and Fred. The oldest at ten, Will, William described as a sturdy helpful boy who would make a good farmer someday. Fred, the youngest at six, was a quiet child always trying to catch up with the older two. Evie, named after her mother Evelyn, William said was scrappy and smart, always leading the other two in adventure. Asked about Evie's sailing lessons with Conor Starfalcon, William thought it was a great idea, since the girl was determined to be a sailor, and some early experience might do her good.

William suspected the children were sometimes lonely because their widowed mother Evelyn served on a merchant ship, so was often away for months at a time, especially with the Gargoyles threat. William's son-in-law Frederick had died five years previously, but the older farmer disliked talking about the event, since the two had been on poor terms.

After his youngest grandson Will, told him that he saw a snake down in his farm's cellar, William had gone to investigate. The farmer found one wall had collapsed recently, and decided to lock the cellar until he had time to repair the damage so nobody could get injured. He absentmindedly could not remember where he left the key.

Lore[edit]

Then there's the farmer with his hippo carvings, and the shepherd, who'll never give you a straight answer.
