Ultima Underworld II

An unnamed goblin appears in Ultima Underworld II, where he may be found in the company of Rogwump and "The Dripper."

Description[edit]

This nameless goblin hailed from the Moglop tribe of the Britannian surface, and had come with his comrades to the waterways beneath Castle Britannia to scavenge and fish when the Guardian crafted his blackrock dome around the keep, trapping them all inside. Cut off from their people and well wary of risking passage through the castle itself, the three goblins camped near to a subterranean lake, trying as best they could to survive in the caverns.

Should the Avatar encounter the lost Moglop, they would tell the hero of their plight and further describe how their situation had been compounded by a clutch of bloodworms cutting into their fishing territory. Should the hero treat the nameless goblin politely, he would offer instruction in the arts of tracking, and would do his best to describe the lay of the area, briefly mentioning the presence of the thief, Fissif, who had traveled into the sewers via Buccaneer's Cave.

The Avatar would have the option of proffering aid to the stranded goblins and could slay the bloodworms on their behalf. In this case, the nameless goblin would bestow the epithet "Wormslayer" and would reward the hero with a gift of fish. Later, the three goblins would decide to give a strange artifact to the Avatar: a blackrock serpent which had come into their tribe's possession after a wounded man brought it to their territory. This stranger, who died shortly after his arrival, was said to have uttered the word "Pagan" before he expired.[1]

Trivia[edit]

  • This goblin is the only character in Ultima Underworld II who can offer training in the art of Tracking. Should the Avatar treat him rudely, he will not offer this training.
  • The way to gain the blackrock serpent is a bit convoluted:
    • The Avatar first has to take care to be firm (demanding to know what they are doing in the sewers) but then not offend the goblin and become more polite, then remark on how they know the way around the sewers.
    • Once the goblin offers training in tracking (if he was not offended), it has to be accepted.
    • Next all the bloodworms around the lake have to be slaughtered so that the goblin gives the Avatar the title "Wormslayer" when talking to him again afterwards.
    • Returning after the death of mayor Patterson, talking with the goblin will result in getting the serpent.
