Battle Axe

Two-handed axes are heavy, two-handed weapons which evolved from more utilitarian instruments, war axes have appeared in Ultima V, Ultima VI, Ultima VII, Ultima VII Part Two, and Ultima IX, as well as in Ultima Underworld and Ultima Underworld II.

Description[edit]

A standard two-handed axe consists of a wooden shaft with a double-bladed head fixed upon it. Doing nearly as much damage as a greatsword, these weapons can be brutally effective in the hands of a warrior strong enough to wield them, combining the blunt force of a bludgeoning weapon with the cutting power of a blade.

This particular version of the more standard axe started to appear for the first time during the tyrannical regime of Lord Blackthorn.

Effectiveness of the Weapon[edit]

In Ultima V, two-handed axes had an effectiveness rating of "20".
In Ultima VI, two-handed axes had an effectiveness rating of "20".
In Ultima VII, two-handed axes had an effectiveness rating of "10".
In Ultima VII Part Two, they had a damage of "7" and a reach of "14".
In Ultima VIII, axes deal between 6–19 points of damage.[1]
In Ultima IX, a simple two-handed axe deals 20–30 points of damage, while one specifically designed for battle does 40–50 points of damage.[2]

Lore[edit]

UWIIBattle Axe.png
Axes do more damage than swords, but take longer to ready. They are slashing weapons — only the pole axe is effective when thrusting, and no axe can bash very well. The battle axe is the most damaging weapon (excluding enchanted or special weapons).

A harbinger of grievance wounds, a battle axe in the hands of a mighty warrior can smash through weapon and shield, armour and plating. An expertly delivered blow from either blade of this doubly edged weapon takes the fight out of all save the most fearsome creatures. Like the rings on a tree of fine wood, the steel of a properly wrought axe most be folded many times.
