Torwin is an apprentice theurgist dwelling on Argentrock Isle. He appears in Ultima VIII.

Description[edit]

Torwin was the son of Toran and Rhian of Tenebrae, and had made the decision to pursue theurgy in the wake of his father's arrest for treason. Knowing that Mordea had given orders for Toran's execution, he pursued the magics of Stratos in the hopes that he could one day resurrect him, and rapidly passed through the first two trials of his apprenticeship as he strove to quickly master the arcane arts.

When the Avatar arrived at Argentrock, Torwin was in the midst of attempting to pass the third trial of a theurgist, whose solution had eluded him despite his best efforts. In speaking with the hero, he made no mention of his family, claiming instead that he strove to be a theurgist in the hopes of gaining personal glory. It was only when the youth was implicated in the theft of another apprentice's spell focus that the Avatar learned Torwin's true motives - discovering that the brash apprentice hoped that either by combining ritual foci or by learning the secret incantation of resurrection he might restore his father to life.[1]

The Avatar confronted Torwin near Windy Point, after learning of his participation in the theft from his friend, Cyrrus.[2] The boy revealed his aims to the hero, who then attempted to dissuade him from his course by explaining that Toran's body had been given over to the Lurker. Refusing to believe these words, Torwin threw the stolen focus to the ground and leapt from the nearby cliff in a desperate attempt to reach Stratos. He met his end in the waters north of Argentrock, joining his father in Hydros' domain.

Searching the cliffs, the Avatar could discover a small jeweled ring which the boy had dropped before his fall. The hero could later take this token to the grieving Rhian and bring her word of her son's death.[3]
