Location: Lycaeum

Temme is a sorceress living in Farthing at the time of Ultima V.

Description[edit]

From the start, Temme showed to have a high opinion of herself, describing herself as a mage of great repute, while acknowledging her lack of modesty. When the Avatar asked about the spell that her apprentice Dufus had mentioned, she was barely able to recall the incantation, An Ylem, and was uncertain about the reagents.[1]

Ultima V: Lazarus[edit]

A haughty but talented mage originally from Moonglow, in Ultima V: Lazarus Temme's fame had to the point where Lord Seggallion had encouraged the sorceress to relocate to Farthing. She continued to study the ways of magic along with her apprentice Dufus, and was even willing to teach magic those who were willing to pay.[2]

The talented magician enjoyed the isolation and tranquility of Farthing, and felt it was ideal for continuing her research, stating that Seggallion was a generous man, and a great patron of the arts, but she personally had little interest in his past affairs. She felt the cook Quintin was a jovial man, and a extremely loyal servant, and her apprentice Dufus, despite being a bit clumsy, more than made up for his shortcomings with enthusiasm. Temme knew little of Jaron other than his scars, she Temme hardly disguised her dislike towards Lyndon, the Oppression Inquisitor on the island, who unbeknownst to her had been sent by Elistaria to try to recruit the talented mage.[3]

Temme told the Avatar that magic and the pursuit of knowledge were amongst the greatest of pursuits, but that magic should only be used for the correct purposes, for this knowledge gave the spellcaster truly awesome powers. She felt the Inquisitor Lyndon could not be trusted with even the most basic magic spells, and she had ensured he hadn't learned her Vanish spell. She was on the other hand willing to show the Avatar her incantation, but soon realized she had lost her research notes, and could not remember the correct incantation and reagents for her spell, stating Dufus was familiar with her work. The Avatar can learn about the correct incantation from Dufus, and his accidental destruction of Lady Temme's notes, either telling Temme about Dufus' mistake, or allowing the boy to be rewarded for his memory.[4]

If told about Seggallion's past career as a pirate, and his role in the death of her brother, she would leave the island.[5] She may also be killed on Lord Dalgrin’s orders by the pirate Jaron, if the Avatar relays Lord Dalgrin's message.[6][7]

Temme taught Impedance, Duration, and Destruction.

The Ultima 6 Project[edit]

This is an Ultima 6 Project-related NPC article or section. The information within may not apply to Ultima VI or other Ultima games.

In The Ultima 6 Project, the ever serious and busy Temme immediately recognized the hero after twenty years, and was still irritated for habitually wasting her time. Since their meeting in Farthing many years previously, Temme had become a member of the Council of Mages, and was responsible for teaching many of the young students at the Lycaeum. She felt discipline was the most important feature of a mage, and sought to instill it into all her young wards.

Temme was unwilling to assist the Avatar with magical training, though, suggesting speaking with Xiao instead. She felt her original student Dufus, now also a teacher at the Lycaeum, had an insufferable need for kindness, and despite her best efforts, had not been able to achieve any modicum of greatness. Dufus, she believed, did not show magic the respect it deserved, and did not demand the respect from his students that the position of teacher required, allowing his students to play tricks and games in the classroom.

Lore[edit]

In this isolated manor, far to the southeast of Skara Brae, resides a retired old sea dog named Lord Seggallion and his eccentric companion, known (at least among those who dwell in Farthing) as the Great Mage Temme. Though she might seem but a proud charlatan, she actually has some innovative ideas concerning spells of disappearance that are well worth listening to.

Trivia[edit]

  • In Ultima V: Lazarus, Temme's character portrait is modeled on world builder Sarah "Wrengland" Shoup.
