A Free Pass from Beheading?[edit]

I seem to recall reading that the Spiked Collar could actually save a party member wearing it from being decapitated at the hands of Blackthorn in Ultima V. Can anyone confirm this? I believe I read it in a hints column of a magazine (likely TSR/Wizards' Dragon Magazine), back when the game was released (so, 1988/1989).

No idea if that's true. Someone (not me, have no fitting save) should have a 2-person party outfitted with collars and then get caught by Blackthorn.--Tribun 12:56, 11 December 2010 (PST)
Excellent idea. I'm having major issues just getting enough cash to get to Jhelom and buy one, let alone a ship to get me to Blackthorn's. :p --Polygoncount 13:30, 11 December 2010 (PST)
You see, if had had my Saved Games idea a year ago, we wouldn't be having this problem. :P That reminds me, I just got 2 dozen original Serpent Isle saved games emailed to me today, and I need to upload them. Dungy 13:57, 11 December 2010 (PST)
Found it! How obscure is this -- Dragon Magazine #148, August 1989: "The Role of Computers," in the 'Clue Corner' section... a guy writes in with many other hints, among them saying "A spiked collar will protect you from the pendulum in Blackthorn's Castle." No further details are given, but there it is... still trying to reach it myself. :p --Polygoncount 14:24, 11 December 2010 (PST)
I sorta doubt this since I think my characters always have had spiked collars. But here is a File:Ultima5Savegame-01.zip that should get you there. :) -- Fenyx4 15:25, 11 December 2010 (PST)
Thanks, Fenyx! Well, I've officially debunked this one -- at least as far as the PC version goes; I equipped everyone with Spiked Collars and they did absolutely no good when placed beneath Blackthorn's pendulum. I played on the Apple ][c back in the day, though (yeah, I'm dating myself), and I'm pretty sure that's the version this clue was for. Anyone got the Apple II version? --Polygoncount 21:20, 11 December 2010 (PST)
