Proposing a title change[edit]

This part of Serpent Isle is referred to in many ways, and unfortunately there is no definitive name to draw upon, but a search of the Usecode reveals "Northern Regions" definitely isn't one of them. Therefore, I think we need a new article title.

I've tried to tally up what the most frequently used references are:

Multiple instances[edit]

  • the North: 3 (capitalized only; there are several additional common references to "the north")
  • the far north: 4
  • frozen north: 3
  • Ice Plains: 2 (one of which is what appears when casting Locate)
  • Northlands: 2

Single instances[edit]

  • Plains of Ice
  • the distant north
  • northern lands
  • northern wastes

The capitalization/lack thereof is just as it appears in the game. With an obvious preference toward those with multiple instances, my personal vote would be for "Frozen North" or "Ice Plains." The former incorporates the widely used "North", is probably the most descriptive/useable article title of that variety, and is broad enough to encompass the islands as well as the mainland (arguably unlike the latter). However, "Ice Plains" does have the significant Locate factor working in its favor, and is one of the few names that are actually a proper noun in the game. I'd be happy with either of these choices, but what do others think? --Terilem 23:28, 8 March 2011 (PST)

I think I would go for Ice Plains. Mostly because it is used by Locate, which seems to be the most official source we can find, and is it capitalized. It also has the "Plains of Ice" appearance, which is just another way to call the same place. Most of the other choices seem to be more like descriptions than actual names, and the frozen north not being capitalized removes important points for that choice for me.
Besides, I'm not sure why the name has to encompass the islands. I have always seen the Northern Regions, or the area we're refering to here, as the mainland, not the islands. The islands have independent names, and do not necessarily need to be grouped together with the same name as this area. Or, we could also have a name for this area, only the mainland (Ice Plains), and another name to refer to "everything up north", which could be Frozen North. But I'm not sure we really need a term for the second thing.--Sega381 06:36, 9 March 2011 (PST)
Yeah you make a lot of good points, and you're right; for the purposes of this issue, the name doesn't need to encompass the islands. I neglected to observe the fact that this article only covers the mainland part.
With regards to a second "frozen north" term, I guess that would really only come into play in the articles themselves as locations within that whole region (I do personally tend to think of anything above the Great Northern Forest as the frozen north, including the islands), but I don't think we need to go out of our way to make room for it. Anyway, I'll leave this discussion out there for a little while longer just in case, but unless anyone shows up with other arguments to make, I'll be changing the title to Ice Plains. --Terilem 03:54, 13 March 2011 (PDT)
Long enough to change it to Ice Plains?--Sega381 13:57, 2 April 2011 (PDT)
Yeah I'd say so. Doesn't look like there's going to be any major objections. --Terilem 21:03, 2 April 2011 (PDT)
