This article is about a character from Ultima VII. For a character from Ultima V, see Lord Stuart the Hungry.

Stuart is an actor in Britain in Ultima VII.

Description[edit]

Stuart was an arrogant man who had been cast in the role of Iolo in the Royal Theatre's hundred-hour epic play "The Trials of the Avatar." Bitter that he had been placed in the role of a non-protagonist by the director and playwright, Raymundo, Stuart railed against the star of the show, Jesse - claiming the actor to be incompetent to the point where any layman could perform better than him. He also directed his venom at Raymundo, himself, feeling betrayed by the fact that they had previously been classmates.[1]

Lore[edit]

My husband directs at the Royal Theatre. Currently, he is producing his own work, The Trials of the Avatar. Surely thy friend will wish to see that. The costumes are fantastic!

Trivia[edit]

  • Stuart's portrait is based upon Stuart Howard, a friend of Ultima VII's lead writer Raymond Benson.[2]
  • Stuart's stage name is Laurence - which he claims to have taken from an idol of his. This idol is very likely the famed Terran actor Laurence Olivier, whose book On Acting can be found in Britannia in this era - likely having been imported by Lord British.[3]
  • Stuart will comment that acting "allows one to step outside oneself and become another person" and that it is "like a game" - perhaps offering commentary on the similarities between his trade and hobbyist players engaging with a computer role-playing game such as Ultima.[4]
  • If Iolo is present in the party, he will comment that Stuart is nothing like him. When thus confronted, the egotistical actor will fail to recognized the bard's true identity, laughing him off when he claims to be the "real Iolo."[1]
