Ultima VII
Location: Terfin

Runeb is a winged gargoyle on Terfin who serves as clerk at the local branch of the Fellowship during Ultima VII.

Description[edit]

Runeb had a reputation throughout Terfin as being a violent and dangerous gargoyle, and many feared him. He appeared to use the power he had gained by becoming an official in the Fellowship to further intimidate those around him, and the local branch leader, Quan, seemed oblivious to his clerk's dangerous anger.[1][2][3][4]

Eventually, not content to serve as Quan's second command, Runeb hatched a plan to destroy the altars of the Principles and to thereafter frame Quan for the crime and murder him. He entangled a local shopkeeper, Sarpling, in his plans, needing access to a catspaw who could get him the explosives he needed to vandalize the shrines.

Should the Avatar come across one of Runeb's missives in Sarpling's possessions, the hero could confront the provisioner, who would reveal his co-conspirators plans and claim that he had been coerced into cooperating. If the Avatar then proceeded to accuse Runeb, the bloodthirsty gargoyle would decide that both the hero and Sarpling must die, and would attack until either he or the Avatar lay slain.[5][6]

Lore[edit]

The Fellowship branch in Terfin has wooed away quite a number of Gargoyles from Singularity. Though I have not known him long, Quan appears pleasant and intellectual. However, his clerk, Runeb, is much more vicious and violent, and rumors suggest that he assaulted some who oppose The Fellowship.

Trivia[edit]

  • Runeb translates to "red mist" in Gargish (which is what he leaves of his enemies). He will claim, sarcastically, if asked, that it means "busy one."[7]
  • In the SNES-port of Ultima VII, Runeb is far more calm and measured before being confronted, and will discuss the Fellowship's pacifist ideology with the hero when asked about the rumors regarding the pedestals. He also, oddly, suggests that the hero speaks to Sarpling about the matter, possibly sparking the chain of events that leads to his discovery.[8]
