With the new form of magic in Ultima IX, spells can now be bound into a spellbook with the Ritual of Binding, so that no more reagents are needed.

Description[edit]

To do so, the mage first needs a spellbook. Once this is obtained, a scroll with the desired spell and the appropriate reagents must be placed into the middle of a special binding pentagram. Next, the mage must ignite all candles of the pentagram, and then chant the words of power in order to bind the spell into the book. However, only freed spell circles can be bound into the spellbook. The number of freed circles is equal to that of repaired shrines.

Should the reagents be wrong, then both scroll and reagents, are lost.

Taught by Altomar in Britain.

Lore[edit]

The most important addition to a young apprentice's spellbook is the Ritual of Binding. When a mage learns a spell and wishes to add it to his repertoire, he must bind the spell into his book with this ritual. It is possible to cast a spell without binding it to one's book, yet to do so banishes the magic to the void and destroys the work of a peer. Alas, with the closure of the Eight Circles of Magic, the Ritual of Binding serves no mundane purpose. Yet, for the rebirth of Virtuous magic, you must learn it.

Trivia[edit]

  • The spell Transcribe in Ultima VII Part Two essentially works the same, also putting a spell scroll into the spellbook. The difference in, that in Ultima VII Part Two, the spells still consume reagents.
