Species: ghost
Appearances
Ultima VII
Location: Skara Brae

Paulette is the ghost of a dead barmaid from Skara Brae. The Avatar can encounter her in Ultima VII.

Description[edit]

Paulette formerly worked at Markham's pub, the Keg o' Spirits. When the great fire which destroyed Skara Brae reached the tavern, Paulette ran further into the burning building – hiding in her room where she eventually perished of smoke inhalation. Re-arising as a ghost, she suffered a fate shared by many in the town, and was bound to the dark service of Horance the liche.[1]

When the Avatar arrived in Skara Brae during the Black Gate adventures, Paulette could tell her story and direct the hero to Caine, the mad spirit of the alchemist who had accidentally sparked the fire. Later, once the Avatar had managed to wrest Horance from the curse of lichedom, the hero would ask Paulette if she might be willing to cast herself into the Well of Souls that it might be destroyed – a request that the childlike young woman hotly rejected. Eventually, however, the former mayor of the settlement, Forsythe, performed the sacrifice necessary to shatter the Well, and Paulette and the other spirits tied to Skara Brae were free at last to return to the Void.[2]

Lore[edit]

The only other spirits still here are Markham and Paulette, the proprietor and server at the Keg o' Spirits, and Quenton.

Trivia[edit]

  • Paulette's behavior differs depending on the Avatar's gender, and a male character will find himself the target of her flirtations.
  • Mordra will reveal that she believed Paulette's father to be a visitor to Britannia from another world – citing his foreign mannerisms and accent – although precisely who he was and where he came from is never made clear.[3]
  • In early drafts of Ultima VII, Paulette was named Rhae. In these documents, the character was also described as "oriental," possibly alluding to her otherwordly lineage mentioned in the game.[4][5]
  • Should Forsythe be present in the party while addressing Paulette, she will embarrass the mayor somewhat – bringing up his past appetites for wine and redheads as she reminisces about their days among the living.
