Palace of the Tempest (southern entrance)

The palace of the Tempest is home to the Pagan city of Tenebrae's current ruler. Appearing in Ultima VIII, its grounds occupy the majority of central Tenebrae.

Description[edit]

A sprawling, moated castle built of rough-hewn terracotta bricks, the palace of the Tempest is openly accessible to the city's citizens, although it is heavily patrolled by guards and those foolish enough to insult the reigning monarch are liable to suffer the lash of their better's power. Within its basements lie a number of cells to house prisoners, and atop its battlements there rests a recall pad, which enables those equipped with an appropriate artifact to teleport to other locations.

At the time of the Avatar's appearance in Pagan, the despotic Tempest Mordea occupied the palace, before being fatally deposed by her half-brother, Devon, who eventually came to reside there himself.

Lore[edit]

In the central part of the city is the Great Palace, home and court of the reigning Lady. From there she rules with a firm hand, keeping the peace via her very real threat of sending criminals to a watery grave.

Trivia[edit]

  • In early sketches for the layout of Tenebrae (as seen on the page about the city itself), the palace was called the "Pearl Palace".
