Nikolai Lenin (1870-1924) was a Russian Marxist revolutionary and communist politician who led the October Revolution of 1917. As leader of the Bolsheviks, he headed the Soviet state during its initial years (1917–1924), as it fought to establish control of Russia in the Russian Civil War and worked to create a socialist economic system.

Description[edit]

In Martian Dreams, Lenin was transported to Mars in the accidental launch of Percival Lowell's space bullet at its exhibition at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Some time during his stay on Mars, Lenin came in contact with the Dream Machine of Elysium, and was trapped in the Dream World while the Martian Pashesh inhabited his body.

Lenin was later freed from his nightmare within the Dream World when the Avatar met him, and agreed to divide the wealth of his imaginary Russia into equal piles of 10 rubles. The Avatar could either divide the rubles, destroying or giving the remainder to Lenin, or could even choose to destroy the entirety of the wealth. Upon being rescued from the Dream World, Lenin had little time to talk to the Avatar, as he was too preoccupied with his plans for the eventual overthrow of the Russian Tsars.[1]

With the creation of mechanical bodies for the Martians, Lenin was restored to his body and returned to Earth on Andrew Carnegie's rocket.

Lore[edit]

Lenin, born Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, was the most influential Communist thinker of his day. The Russian revolutionary, and founder of the Bolshevik party, first studied the teachings of Karl Marx in 1889, while a university student. In 1907, two years after the failure of the first Russian revolution, Lenin left the country, but continued the struggle to bring Marxism to his homeland from abroad. In 1917, he returned to lead a successful revolution which left him in charge of a new Soviet government. He led the USSR until his death in 1924. Lenin's dream of a world in which all members of society shared ownership of property and in which wealth was distributed equitably found curious expression during his experience on Mars.

Trivia[edit]

  • In 1893 (the year in which the fictional Lowell expedition takes place), Lenin, a young lawyer, had recently moved to St. Petersburg to practice revolutionary propaganda.
  • In 1895 (the year in which Martian Dreams place), Lenin was arrested for plotting against Tsar Alexander III, and was then imprisoned for fourteen months in solitary confinement.
  • It is also possible to just burn all the rubles in the dream by torching them with one of the candles and then give the gem to Lenin, thus ensuring the state always got its share. Lenis then will be impressed by the unorthodox solution the Avatar found to his problem.
