Mysterious Moe is the name given to a horse whom the Stranger purchases and befriends in the novelization of Ultima IV in Ultima: The Avatar Adventures.

Description[edit]

The hero was introduced to Moe by the unnamed stablemaster of Paws, and later purchased the animal for a sum of one hundred gold coins. A small roan horse, at times referred to as a pony, Moe is described as being of a gentle and very approachable temperament, and the Stranger quickly bonded with him, despite having no past equestrian training. He is spoken of as having an uneven gait and soft, deep brown eyes.

In their early adventures in the wilds near Britain, the hero developed a strong attachment to Moe, developing a deep feeling of protectiveness regarding the steed as they fought against the roaming monsters of the realm. It was partially out of sympathy for the horse's peril that the Stranger began to awaken to the virtue of Valor, and the still disoriented adventurer was confronted by sometimes unwieldy odds to keep Moe out of danger.

Tragically, Mysterious Moe perished when the Stranger was attacked and slain by a marauding balron east of Britain – and while Lord British was able to revive the hero from the shadow of death, he had not the ability to save the injured horse.[1]
