The Music Hall

The Music Hall (sometimes also called the Conservatory) is one Britain's numerous cultural institutions, and serves as both a center of learning and a venue for performances. It operated for several centuries – from before the time of Ultima VI until some point after Ultima VII.

History[edit]

Age of Enlightenment[edit]

Founded some time after the end of Lord Blackthorn's unfortunate reign, the Music Hall was created concurrently with other similar public works projects, namely the Royal Museum with which it originally shared a building.[1] During its heyday under the direction of famed court musician Lord Kenneth and his wife the Lady Nan, the Music Hall trained a number of famous bards, including Johann, Patrick, Lazeena and Sionnach.[2] It also was the site of the child Ariana's early years of tutelage, during which she was entrusted with the rune of Compassion and first met the Avatar, leading to her lifelong devotion to the city's signature virtue.[3]

Age of Armageddon[edit]

Over the next two centuries, the Music Hall eventually gained a separate building from the museum, although its prominence appeared to have declined by the time of the Avatar's adventures regarding the black gate. Overseen by the talented Judith in this age, the conservatory saw few students outside of its supervisor's band, "The Avatars" – although it continued to maintain an impressive collection of instruments and music.[4]

Eventually, the Music Hall disappeared from the cityscape. By the time of Ultima IX, the once famous school of the arts was one of many once prominent sites that were absent from the declining kingdom.

Lore[edit]

Just south of the castle are a couple of buildings that house government sponsored projects. One such building is the conservatory. Most bards have taken some training there, though I never did myself. I believe they teach the Mantra of Compassion, among other things.
This is the opulent and majestic capital of Britannia, famed city of Compassion, and it is where thou mayest find the Castle of Lord British. Britain is built on the shore of Britanny Bay. It is easily the largest city in all of Britannia and it has seen much new development. It is the home of the historic Wayfarer's Inn, Royal Theatre and the Music Hall.
The city has grown since the Avatar's last visit. Though many of the royally supported institutions are still present, such as the Mint and the Music Hall, there are also new objects of interest.

In Ultima V: Lazarus, an institution known as the Bard's Academy existed in Britain, which was run by the musician Salan, who was entrusted with the tutelage of the students Teril and Ludrag.
