Maria is a small child trapped in Terfin in Ultima IX.

The Avatar met the pathetic and frightened Maria deep within the bowels of Terfin. The terrified child told the Avatar how she was constantly tortured and beaten by gargoyles, and that they had given her a slow acting poison which would inevitably kill her. Maria begged the Avatar to kill her, so that she could be spared this slow death. Should the Avatar allow Maria to live, the Guardian would mock this inability to even help a small child, and yet, if deciding to end the girl's life, the Guardian would mock the hero anyway for killing children.[1]

- Maria might be linked to a trademark repeated in Ultima games since Ultima V, where the Avatar is faced with some compulsion to kill children.
