The magic lantern is an item unique to the SNES-port of Ultima VII. It serves a similar function to the wisp whistle from the PC version of the game, allowing the Avatar to communicate with the wisps.
Description[edit]
The Avatar received the magic lantern from Trellek, after earning the emp's favor with a gift of honey. By shining its light into the wilds of Deep Forest during the night, the hero could attract a wisp, and begin a conversation with it.[1]
