Species: human
Appearances
Ultima IV
Location: Vesper
Description: clerk of The Guild Shop

Long John Leary is the shopkeeper of the Guild Shop in Vesper during the time of Ultima IV.

Description[edit]

Aside from One Eyed Willey, Long John Leary ran one of the only guild shops in the realm, and bore the distinction of being the only operator of such a business on the Britannian mainland. Like many shopkeeps of the era, the man spoke little outside of the particulars of buying and selling his assortment of wares, although a canny adventurer would know the words with which to convince him to sell unlisted items such as a sextant.

Trivia[edit]

  • In a document discovered by historians Robert De Main and Carlotta Stein, which purports to be the Avatar's personal diary, Long John Leary is described as a slovenly man, sporting a peg-leg, an eyepatch and several days of unshaved stubble. The (then) Stranger notes the feeling of having accidentally stumbled into Treasure Island upon meeting him.[1]
  • Long John Leary's name may, in fact, be based upon that of the famous fictional pirate Long John Silver from Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Treasure Island. Another character who may derive his name from the famous antagonist is Silver John.
