Krayg is a Serpent Islander who worked as Monitor’s provisioner. He appears in Ultima VII Part Two.

Description[edit]

Krayg was a Monitorian Knight of the Wolf Command who ran a small provisions shop known as The Tools of the Trade, which was adjoined to his living quarters on Pikemans' Road. In his youth, he chanced to sustain a severe injury to his arm during the course of his first battle against the Goblins, and the injury left his elbow awkwardly bent such that he was unable to wield a sword properly.[1] Unable to serve as a warrior on the battlefield or to join in the duels and tournaments that so many Monitorians loved, Krayg became a solitary and quiet man, enjoying long walks in the nearby woods where he could journey among the ruins left by the ancient Ophidian wars and collect antique weapons and armour.[2]

This peculiar habit attracted some measure of distrust from the more martially-minded Knights of the city, and after the lethal betrayal of Astrid’s patrol, the outspoken Luther accused Krayg of conspiring with the Goblin forces.[3] Under suspicion, Krayg protested that he was no traitor and that he had often seen another figure wandering the wilderness. Eager to prove his innocence, he suggested to the Avatar that there might be evidence implicating this second wanderer near a Goblin rendezvous site in the forest.[4] The hero was eventually able to discover an intact bottle of Fawnish ale in the vicinity of the meeting place, which could be traced to the innkeeper Simon, and upon being confronted, Simon revealed that he was not only a traitor to the city but a goblin who had spent his long life disguised as a human being.

Krayg, along with most of Monitor's people, eventually fell victim to an invading army of goblins and beasts, who were led to attack the city by the Bane of Wantonness after it escaped its prison and possessed the body of Sir Dupre.

Trivia[edit]

  • Should one pick the locks on the three chests in Krayg's shop, one will find an assortment of torches, candles, and other light sources. Doing the same to the chests in his personal quarters will reveal an variety of arms and armour, including a set of antique armour and a serpent dagger. 11 monetari and a piece of jewelry may also be found among his possessions.
  • Luther and Caladin will both suggest that the bottle of ale the Avatar finds in the woods belongs to Krayg, with the latter suggesting that a provisioner would have cause to deal in any number of bottled substances. If confronted, Krayg will insist that he doesn't drink and that his injuries have left him unable to stomach anything stronger than boiled milk. Should the Avatar bring Krayg the bottle without leveling any accusations, he will take the opportunity to suggest that the traitor is Luther, citing the Knight's reputation as a drunkard.[6][7][8]
  • Should the Avatar show Harnna the pumice stone that a teleport storm exchanged for the hero's spellbook, she will recommend consulting Krayg, on account of his frequent explorations of the wilderness.[9] Krayg will recognize the rock's volcanic origins and will advise the hero to consult the blacksmith Standarr, who has made a number of expeditions to the dungeon Furnace.[10] Harnna will also direct the Avatar to Krayg should the hero ask about the slippers that were exchanged for the hero's swamp boots, and Krayg will observe that nobody in Monitor would be likely to wear so decorative an article, suggesting that such things might be found at the nearby Inn of the Sleeping Bull.[11][12]
