Joth is one of the Great Captains of Fawn, a city on the Serpent Isle. He appears in Ultima VII Part Two.

Description[edit]

Joth was a lifelong sailor who felt far more at home on the open sea than on land. When he was well into middle age, a series of teleport storms began to ravage the Isle. The storms replaced the Lighthouse with a strange haunted building. Joth was leading a fleet of ships back to Fawn when this happened. In desperation, he set the main sail of his ship on fire to guide the other ships into the harbor. This saved the rest of the fleet, but Joth's ship ran aground. Trapped in the rigging, he badly injured his back. The town's healer, Seth, had recently been murdered by goblins, so Joth never healed right. He was compelled to take a position among the Great Captains. Unfortunately, the storms only grew worse, and soon the entire Fawn fleet was lost. Joth spent many hours staring out at the unforgiving sea.

Joth was well aware that Great Captain Voldin was the true power in Fawn, though he did not suspect the depths to which Voldin was controlling the city. When the Avatar arrived in Fawn, Voldin's conspiracy was uncovered.

Like most of the citizens of Fawn, Joth was killed when the Insanity Bane (possessing the body of Iolo) destroyed the city.

Lore[edit]

The Great Captains, Delphynia explained, served as advisors to Lady Yelinda, the leader of Fawn. Their names were Joth, Garth and Voldin.

...

As I approached them, they interrupted their conversation and looked at me expectantly. I told them I was looking for information on their city. They took the time to tell me that their job was to deal with the day-to-day running of the city so that their fair leader, Lady Yelinda, would not have to be bothered with such mundane matters. They also told me that Kylista served their city as the Priestess of Beauty, and gave me directions to the temple so that I might meet with her. Although they were polite and helpful, their attitude was somewhat patronizing.

Trivia[edit]

  • There is a remarkable discrepancy between the game and Balancing the Scales. In the game, it's made clear that Joth became a Great Captain after the teleport storms started. However, in the clue book he already is a Great Captain, despite the teleport storms, which caused him to move into that post, not having started at that point.
  • Complicating things further, Joth states that the incident which crippled him happened years ago. However, the lighthouse vanished only recently and even the storms themselves only raged for some months. Joth's statement of the timeframe and the length of his duty as Great Captain are thus factually wrong.
