Jospur is an oddsmaker who makes his coin arranging fights between fighters in the Pits of Carnage. He appears in Ultima Underworld II.

Description[edit]

Jospur carved a niche for himself in the pits by setting up organized arena combats, allowing challengers to wager their lives and gold as they faced large groups of opponents. For five coins, he would arrange for a contender to fight between two and five of his fellows, and would pay back the bet and more should he survive the ordeal. The Avatar could engage Jospur and thus turn a profit through shedding the blood of others.

Should the Avatar repeatedly best groups of five in Jospur's matches, the old bookkeeper would become reluctant to do business with the hero, fearing that he would lose what profit he made from his operations should he be forced to continue to award the hero such hefty payouts. The Avatar, who would by now have gained considerable respect in the pits, could threaten to sully Jospur's reputation should he refuse bets, and the aged fighter would grudgingly setup further matches.[1]

Lore[edit]

Jospur is a crafty old fellow who has found a way to turn arena combat into a profitable enterprise. Using one of the rooms to the east as his office, he allows warriors to bet on themselves in arena combats against two or more foes. There is always a demand for Jospur’s services, since success earns a warrior both gold and prestige.

Trivia[edit]

  • Should the Avatar be sufficiently skilled at combat, placing bets with Jospur will quickly earn money and experience points. Many of the unique enchanted items in the game (Coif of Valor, Leather Vest of Flameproof, Sword of Stone Strike, etc...) may be employed to great effect in the arena, allowing the player to effectively dispatch groups of five men.
