Ice hounds
Icehound
Icehound, from Ultima IX manual
Only appearance: Ultima IX

While usually daemonic creatures are associated with fire, ice hounds are the exact opposite.

Description[edit]

These extraplanar creatures are the opposite of hellhounds, having a constitution based on cold. Their icy breath can immobilise an enemy in seconds, allowing the ice hound to then bite them to death. Once defeated, an ice hound will melt into an innocuous puddle of water, leaving behind no corpse.

They only appeared once, in Ultima IX.

They are found only in cold regions or high up in the mountains.

Lore[edit]

This watery creature of the Pit serves the bidding of more powerful beasts, yet do not underestimate these cunning creatures. A freezing breath can immobilise a warrior, leaving him defenceless against attacks from the rear and side. Large teeth and superior hearing make any encounter with an icehound a fatal one for man or hound.

Trivia[edit]

  • Ice hounds do leave behind several gems. Once having access to fire magic, they are an easy way to quickly accumulate gems for money.
