Glimmer is the most basic light spell available to a mage.

Spell Description[edit]

Using the Glimmer spell, a faint light will surround the caster for a short time, allowing improved vision in dark areas without any mana or reagent cost. The spell however only lasts for a short time, and may not be worthwhile if reagents and mana are in abundance.

The spell has the same effect as drinking a white potion.

The Light or even Great Light spells provide more light for a greater length of time.

Lore[edit]

This spell creates a small light source that lasts for a short period of time.

Ultima Saga[edit]

This article or section is about the Ultima Saga series of novels. The information within may not apply to Ultima V or other Ultima games.

Similar to In Lor, the linear magic of handfire produces a small amount of light. Unlike the brilliant, torch-like light of In Lor, the small glow of handfire is barely more than that of a candle.[1]

Quote[edit]

There was a dish of charcoal near the door. Althea dipped her fingers in the powder, then snapped them. Cold light coated her hand and winked harmlessly as she shuffled out of her borrowed gown.
Handfire didn't last very long. The nimbus was already fading when she heard boot heels in the corridor.

- from The Temper of Wisdom (Ultima Saga)

Trivia[edit]

  • Thanks to a bug in the light engine of Ultima VII, this spell can be made to last forever, after a different light spell has just expired.
  • Light spells in Ultima VII and Ultima VII Part Two differ from all other lightsources in the games by using the palette 6, which results in much nicer colors without a red tint. This mechanic for some reason was broken in Exult right from the start, where the spells instead used the palettes 11 and 12 like all other lightsources. This was finally fixed in 2020.
